Ο ύμνος αυτός
ανήκει στα αρχαία άσματα και ψάλλονταν στη Λειτουργία του Ιακώβου του Αδελφοθέου
μέχρι τα χρόνια του Ιουστινιανού. Από τότε καθιερώθηκε να ψάλλεται αντί αυτού ο
χερουβικός ύμνος «Oι τα Χερουβείμ μυστικώς εικονίζοντες».
Η Μεγάλη Δευτέρα είναι αφιερωμένη στη μνήμη του Ιωσήφ, του επωνομαζόμενου "Παγκάλου" της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης και στην άκαρπη συκιά, που την καταράστηκε ο Χριστός και ξεράθηκε μ' ένα του λόγο.

Ο Ιωσήφ στην υπηρεσία του Φαραώ
Ο Ιωσήφ ήταν ο μικρότερος υιός του Ιακώβ ο οποίος τα αδέλφια του τον ζήλεψαν λόγω της ενάρετης ζωής του και έφθασαν στο σημείο να τον πούλησαν σε εμπόρους.
Η συνάντηση του Ιωσήφ με τα αδέλφια του
Οι έμποροι αυτοί τον πούλησαν στον αρχιμάγειρα του Φαραώ της Αιγύπτου, τον Πετεφρή. Εκεί ο Ιωσήφ συκοφαντήθηκε από την γυναίκα του Πετεφρή και ο Φαραώ τον φυλάκισε. Κάποτε όμως ο Φαραώ είδε ένα παράξενο όνειρο και ζήτησε έναν ερμηνευτή. Ο Ιωσήφ ερμήνευσε ότι θα έλθουν στη χώρα επτά χρόνια ευφορίας και επτά χρόνια λιμού. Ο Φαραώ έδωσε, μετά από αυτό, στον Ιωσήφ μεγάλα αξιώματα.

με συνοδεία νοηματικής γλώσσας
Τα αδέρφια του φανερώθηκαν μπροστά του ζητώντας βοήθεια λόγω του λιμού που είχε πέσει και εκείνος τους συγχώρεσε και τους προσκάλεσε να μείνουν μόνιμα στην Αίγυπτο μαζί με τους γονείς του.
